Is Instagram Ageist? Say whaaat...

Instagram have been very open about their focus being on young people and creators because they are 'trend setters'... well hello me!

These young people are our future clients and even current customers. They may not be buying real estate just yet, but they certainly love to look. They're very savvy shoppers and right into DIY styling and design, making Instagram the ideal Social Media channel.

  • More than 38% of the Australian population are on Insta.
  • Largest group being aged between 25-34.
  • 56.9% are women.....Hello decision makers.

Let's be real, majority of the decision makers in real estate, interior design, styling and building are women. If the wife / partner does not like it, the husband wouldn't dare to buy. That's the general consensus, making it almost fact.

Instagram has created a range of features to suit the creativity of its users. It offers, posts, reels, stories, videos and creative tools including royalty-free music, filters, stickers, live video, video record and post.

Word has it that the more of its features you use, the more Instagram will prioritise your post! This encourages a culture of testing and measuring the most effective content format to help you drive your business further.

Create your own or share existing content?

Friends making user generated content at home

Creating regular blogs, social media posts or videos can be time consuming – if not daunting.

Content creation means you share your knowledge, insights and opinions through your original content. It allows you to be creative, highlight your expertise and provide targeted content to your specific audience. While you’ve probably got lots of great ideas, expert tips and industry insights to share, you might only have time to write 1-2 blogs each month. And, well, making videos might not be your thing. Besides, your followers will soon get bored if you’re constantly promoting your own products or services.

So how do you fill the gaps to ensure you stay connected with your online audience while providing them with relevant and useful content?

Using curated content means you share other people’s social posts, blogs or videos. They may have ideas, tips or resources outside of your own expertise, but still provide value for your followers.

For example, if you’re in the real estate business - or a builder, or interior decorator - you could share existing content about DIY renovations, interior design tips, how to grow your own herb garden, how to waterproof your garage, or what type of building materials are best for an outdoor deck.

This not only provides your audience with fresh content, it saves you time and effort, and helps you to build relationships with others in your industry. If you’re sharing other people’s content, chances are they’ll also share your original content.

Of course, you should make sure the information is relevant to your audience, and you’re only sharing from trusted sources, such as your industry body or recognised business experts. And remember to acknowledge the source.

How do you find the balance between posting self-promotional, educational and informational content?

  1. Start by writing a list of your areas of expertise – what can you comfortably talk/write about?
  2. Where are your gaps?
  3. Who do you follow that provides complementary or relevant content that would be suitable for your audience?
  4. Make a monthly plan – for example, you could have a monthly theme and alternate between created and curated content each week.
  5. Start off by sharing 40% created and 60% curated content and adjust it from there depending how your audience responds.

Alternatively, if you prefer to focus on your core business, outsourcing your content strategy and development is always an efficient and effective option.

Start a discussion and get your content strategy right, contact Pickled Pear Media.

Why Content Matters

Woman filming cooking vlog. Concept of vlogging, blogging and content creation holding like, follow and subscribe signs

Keeping your target audience engaged and interested is an absolute must! This can be achieved by being up to date and informed of the wants & needs of your audience for long-term success.

Whether you are a real estate agent, architect, interior designer, builder or developer, the content presented on your website and social media platform is the key foundation to accelerating your journey. Your audience needs to be able to relate to the content and context of what you are posting, and we are here to provide you with five top tips on how you can achieve this.

SMART goals.

SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound goals that you set out to accomplish. Think about what your target audience wants, and what you can do to deliver this to them. Here is a quick guide on how to write Smart goals.

Quality and relevancy

Ensure your content is accurate and relevant to your market. Avoid ‘filler words’ and don’t spend half of your video umming and ahing! Instead, take a deep breath and get to the point with pronounced enthusiasm. William Zinsser suggests reading your content out loud, paying attention to rhythm and sound. If you struggle with this, then your audience will too. High quality content and relevancy will ensure that your audience will keep coming back for more.

Social media options

Take advantage of built-in analytics and tracking functions on social media platforms and include links to your website. Facebook Insights is where you can track your audience reach, visitor engagements and demographics, all vital to your business or branding strategy. Instagram also contains built-in analytics features. These automated functions are there to provide you with the knowledge of what your audience is interested in. By regularly checking insights, you will be able to tailor your content accordingly.

Be consistent & listen to your audience

If you are posting daily vlogs just for the sake of posting regularly, you may find that your viewers will get bored rather quickly, but remember to balance that with regular content to ensure you please the mysterious social platform algorithms. Stick to a few uploads per week or month and ensure they contain juicy content that your audience can look forward to. Allow viewers or readers the opportunity to ask questions, respond to them and ensure your audience knows that their engagements are valued and appreciated.

Automate repetitive manual tasks and link your platforms

The advantages of Power Automation, and similar software, will save you time and money by reducing workloads, creating a seamless, automated process tailored to suit your needs. Not only is this good for you, but great for the environment too! Sounds too good to be true? Well, Kevin Stratvert has created an excellent tutorial on how to use Power Automate to make time consuming tasks a simpleaffair, so that you can free up more of your time to create quality content for your audience.

It is critical to keep business goals aligned when creating content for your targeted audience, so be sure to follow these tips to create that lasting impact. As Mark Twain once said, “ … the secret of getting ahead, is getting started!”.

Why outsource to the experts?

Outsourcing

It’s tax time, and like me, you probably just hand the job over to your accountant or tax agent and let them do what they know best.

That’s one less thing to worry about when your priority is focusing on your business.

You’re probably already juggling several tasks, depending how many staff you have: Responding to customer queries, planning business strategies, delivering your services and/or goods, looking for new clients, and so on. Who’s got time for social media, or writing a blog or two?

The growing numbers of people online these days provides an essential platform for you to interact with existing - and potential - customers and increase your brand awareness. However, the constantly changing online environment also makes it difficult to stay up to date with different social platforms, strategies and content creation – especially when that’s not your, or your team’s, thing.

Just like your tax agent, a social media or content writer – or any other expert who can support you – generally has years of experience in their field and can provide you with specific services to help raise your online profile and grow your business. Think of them as your extended team, without the overheads of a full-time employee.

When you factor in training, office equipment, uniform, salary, taxes, annual/sick/personal leave, it could potentially cost you an extra $10,000 for each employee (above their wage).

Benefits to your business

Unless you have the time or skills to look after your online marketing yourself, outsourcing to an expert can:

  • Save time – they can deliver the job quickly and more efficiently
  • Deliver quality work – they’re only focused on a specific job
  • Keep you focused – through a clear strategy and goals tailored for your business
  • Provide a fresh perspective – they have new ideas and use strategies that work
  • Reduce stress – you and your team can focus on what you do best, without worrying about writing or scheduling social posts
  • Increase finance opportunities – they can improve your success with tender or business grant submissions

Your outsourcing checklist

Have a think about how and why you would outsource jobs:

  • Set clear goals - what do you want help with?
  • How often do you need their services - weekly, monthly?
  • Budget – will you pay a per project fee or hourly rate?
  • Agency or individual expert – use someone who provides whole project management (writing and scheduling social posts) or specific tasks (copywriting only)?
  • Ask for recommendations - talk to other businesses that outsource to experts.
